Arsenal Vs Watford: 5 key players to watch – End on a high
2. Lucas Torreira
Being hauled off after a rather tepid, conservative 45 minutes is not the best way to go about earning a starting role for yourself. Lucas Torreira has seen his midfield spot handed to Dani Ceballos, who has since flourished alongside Granit Xhaka in Arteta’s 3-4-3 shape. On Tuesday, Torreira started in place of Xhaka. He was poor and was subsequently withdrawn at half-time.
There have been growing murmurs that Torreira may look to leave Arsenal in the summer. He has consistently been said to want a return to Italy, and with regular minutes seemingly at a premium, as he reaches his peak years, an exit seems highly possible.
If he is to prove himself at Arsenal, then, the Uruguayan needs to set about making a difference quickly. Arteta has not entirely moved on from Torreira, and while Xhaka and Ceballos have formed a stable duo, Torreira’s defensive skills make him unique. Nevertheless, this will be his final match that he may start. If he is handed the opportunity from the off, he cannot afford to fall flat, as he did last time out against Aston Villa.
