Arsenal have officially agreed to a three-year-deal with Willian

Arsenal have completed their first signing of the summer. After 7 seasons at Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the Europa League, 32-year-old Willian has made the move across London.

Mikel Arteta is convinced that the Brazilian, who is good friends with David Luiz, will make a big impact at the club, both on and off the pitch. In an article written by Rob Kelly of Arsenal.com, here is what Arteta had to say:

"“I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us. We have been monitoring him for the past few months, we had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions [and] he is a player that gives us a lot of versatility, he can play in three or four different positions. He has the experience of everything in the football world but to still have the ambition to come here and contribute to bring the club where it belongs. I have been really impressed with all the talks I have had with him and how much he wanted to come.”"

There is no denying that Arsenal needed to sign another attacker this summer. With Gabriel Martinelli’s long-term injury, doubts surrounding the future of Alexandre Lacazette, and uncertainty as to where Bukayo Saka will establish himself, they needed more depth and quality in the final third.

Nikesh Teckwani wrote a fantastic piece detailing the benefits of Willian’s long-awaited arrival. Mikel Arteta now has an energetic, experienced, versatile, and creative player who will undoubtedly improve his squad in the short-term.

Nonetheless, Willian’s signing rightfully elevates concerns about the Arsenal hierarchy, as the Brazilian becomes the latest Kia Joorabchian client to find his way to the Emirates. Furthermore, at 32, Willian’s best days are probably behind him. He also has issues with consistency and Arsenal could arguably have used the money associated with his contract more efficiently.
