Arsenal vs West Ham Player Ratings: Thank God That’s Over

Here are the Player Ratings from Arsenal’s scrappy 2-1 win against West Ham.

That was really hard to watch.

Arsenal scrapped their way to a slightly undeserved 2-1 win at the Emirates against West Ham this Saturday. I’m thankful for the three points, but there are some pretty serious underlying problems that need to be addressed.

The match started very end-to-end, with both teams unable to find a solid foothold above the other. Physicality reigned supreme, with a series of niggling fouls breaking up both teams’ attempts at establishing a rhythm. Arsenal grew into the first half, and finally broke through in the 25th minute, with Alexandre Lacazette scoring an easy header off a beautifully looped Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cross.

From there they sat off, and the game returned to an odd neutral gear, with one defensive lapse by Arsenal allowing West Ham to come back into the game through Michail Antonio -the second half didn’t get much better.

From the 55th minute onward, the Hammers took over the game, with Arsenal tiring and dropping steadily deeper. A series of small lapses and near-misses kept the game at 1-1, but David Moyes’ side looked the more likely to score.

However, Arsenal retook the game around the 70th minute, starting to dominate on the ball again. We rediscovered our poise, and started to pen in West Ham. Eddie Nketiah‘s goal was the good product of some stellar attacking play towards the end of the match, but it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.
