Arsenal 2-1 West Ham: 3 Things We Learned From Unconvincing Display

These Results Are Not Sustainable
Going into Saturday’s game, no one gave West Ham United a chance following the debacle that was their showing against Newcastle United. Nonetheless, they will be disappointed that they did not leave the Emirates Stadium with at least a point. The smile on Arteta’s face at full-time was one of pure joy (and relief). Despite the success that the club has enjoyed since his arrival, he knows that these toothless performances against ‘lesser’ sides cannot continue.
Arsenal enjoyed 63% possession yet only had seven shots to West Ham’s 14, their lack of creativity again clear for all to see. It came as no surprise that Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey were trending on Twitter after the game. Xhaka and Ceballos have proven themselves to be an effective midfield pairing, but the middle of the park certainly needs addressing. The sooner that Arteta has the personnel to transition to a 4-3-3 against ‘inferior’ opposition, the better.
With this result, Arsenal showed character both collectively and individually. Bukayo Saka did not have his best game, yet he was integral to both goals. It was not pretty, but Saturday’s three points could prove crucial come the end of the season.
