Arsenal, like all groups of fans, go bonkers for lineups.

The hour building up to kick-off sees social media dominated by predetermined criticisms, gross exaggerations and inventive conspiracy stories. Faith in the manager, Arsenal’s or otherwise, tends to disappear for a moment.

Sometimes it’s justified and sometimes it’s unavoidable, but there was one player not in the squad to face Molde FK that brought about inquisitions: Folarin Balogun.

His senior debut was short, but ultimately sweet, as he gave a solid account of himself during a brief cameo in the win over Dundalk. Baying for balls in behind and constantly making runs between the centre-halves, it was flashes of the quality he’s demonstrated throughout his time with the youth sides.

Was that the moment? Apparently not. He was nowhere to be seen on Thursday, and Mikel Arteta explained why post-match, via The Athletic.

"“The chances will come with what they show us with their performances on the pitch and in training. The better results we have and the more clear we are in the group stages, obviously that opens the door a little bit more to give more opportunities to more players that deserve it.“At the moment we still have some senior players that we cannot give them the time that they deserve because at the moment we have a lot of fit players.”"

On the surface it may come across as Balogun showing a lack of desire to fight for his place, but reading between the lines and based off Arteta’s man-management, I’d argue otherwise.

Players must earn their spot in the team. There are plenty of assurances with Arteta’s style but none stand out as clearly as that. Matteo Guendouzi and Mesut Ozil are just two high-profile examples.

It’s also important to temper an individual’s expectations. Ensuring they continue to progress in training and master the demands of their teachers is crucial in maintaining a steady flow of improvement. Balogun still has a long way to go in the quest for regular senior football and the road to stardom can’t be fast-tracked for fear of a damaging long-term impact.

There is also the obvious need to win against Molde. Fielding a strong team, Arteta’s desire to take a lead in the group was unarguably the right call.

Securing qualification as early as possible will grant the youngsters their time to shine. Balogun can be sure of further minutes, perhaps even from the start, when top spot is wrapped up. Patience is a virtue, after all, and Balogun’s omission on Thursday is no reason to be disheartened.
