Arsenal Back to Old Tricks in Dominik Szoboszlai Pursuit
Arsenal will try whatever way to land Dominik Szoboszlai in January.
Wouldn’t you? A multi-faceted talent who current trajectory points towards European footballing heavyweight in the coming years is an opportunity you can’t let up. Hence why Arsenal will try anything to secure his signature.
The January window opens on the 4th and closes of February 1st. Between now and when it opens, and likely all the way through until 30 seconds before it shuts, Dominik Szoboszlai‘s name will be everywhere.
This club, that club, Arsenal on track, Arsenal drifting further afield, what his favourite brand of trainers are, you name it, we’ll hear about it.
What will stay prevalent throughout the speculation about where he may end up for the second half of the season is the sheer volume of clubs keen to sign him. From AC Milan to RB Leipzig, the interest is real. Such a delightfully inviting release clause helps.
From a neutral perspective it will be interesting to see where he ends up. At least for a couple more weeks, until the saga follows the usual route of being mind-numbingly repetitive and frustrating. He will go somewhere, and Arsenal are doing their best to win the race.
As per Football Insider, one of the multiple formulas Mikel Arteta‘s side could employ is the one exact one they used in 2019: buy-to-loan. In an effort to appease Red Bull Salzburg and tend to their needs, they could sign Szoboszlai in January and immediately loan him back to the Austrian Bundesliga side for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.
Facing stern interest from S*purs, among others, it could boil down to needs must if they are to get their man, just as Arsenal did with William Saliba and Saint-Etienne.
Given the intense interest in the Hungarian and the calibre of teams across Europe stalking around, such an eventuality may be necessary to avoid missing out entirely. Is it something Die Roten Bullen are particularly bothered about? They sold Erling Haaland in January without desiring he be loaned back, same with Takumi Minamino at Liverpool, so perhaps not.
Can Arsenal wait until next season? Based on the current plight, you’d have to say no. Gabriel Martinelli’s return can’t come any sooner, but he will require a great deal of time to hit peak fitness and tends to a different need. Strap in for incessant Szoboszlai speculation.
