Midfielders

Mohamed Elneny (CM) – Had a very haphazard first half against Rapid, misplacing passes and slow to react to turnovers. Should really be starting over Granit Xhaka in domestic matches so hopefully some more minutes on Thursday will get him match fit for a return to league action on Sunday.

Emile Smith Rowe (AM) – Injury prevented him from featuring more than he has, and the only reason Arteta could opt against starting Smith Rowe on Thursday is with an eye on the Burnley game, which despite fan desire, he won’t do. One assist and a goal in his two Europa League outings off the bench have set him up for Thursday. He must start.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles (CM) – Arteta won’t be willing to throw Maitland-Niles straight into midfield for Premier League matches without seeing him operate in the role more than once. Whether agreed or not, he won’t make that call. That said, what can he learn that he didn’t already against Dundalk, who admittedly are weaker opposition than Rapid Vienna?
