Arsenal have been handed a lifeline in their efforts to accrue some funding in the coming windows with Monaco keen on offering Lucas Torreira a route out of Atletico Madrid.

From the first minute of the summer transfer window right up until the end, rumours were swirling in regards to Torreira’s future. It became apparent since Mikel Arteta took charge that the midfielder didn’t feature in his plans as he opted for a central partnership of Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka, thus an exit was on the cards.

Issues of not being fully settled in at the club and the obvious lack of playing time strongly hinted towards a permanent departure at the end of the season. Despite being linked to every club in Serie A and half of La Liga, Arsenal’s demands were too high in context to the financial limitations of the market and a loan was all they could muster.

Still, moving to an established, Champions League side such as Atletico was a move to suit the player. Over three months on and he’s completed 90 minutes once, starting just four matches.

In order to protect his value and to ensure Arsenal can garner as much from his sale as feasible in the summer, he has to be playing. As that isn’t the case in Spain, AS follow on from various reports in France to claim that Monaco are eager to take Lucas Torreira to Ligue 1.

They’ve become frontrunners after the usual Italian suspects on this deal have all underwent significant changes either in terms of manager or financially.

Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Torino, Valencia and Sevilla have all been linked of late, each club since tailing off the case and more likely to review the situation in the summer.

Claims in France were that a three-year deal was on the table from Monaco, while AS suggest it’s just a simple six-month loan. With the January window slamming shut on 1st February, this story could unravel quite quickly, even though Arteta refused to be drawn on another potential loan.
