Runar Alex Runarsson Leaving Arsenal on Loan

It didn’t take long for comparisons to be drawn between Runar Alex Runarsson and Kepa Arrizabalaga, such was the disastrous performance the Icelandic goalkeeper produced in the Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City.

His displays before that hardly set the world alight, and if anything dampened expectations that Arsenal had pulled off a real coup in signing him from Dijon for £1.5m.

With Ryan since arriving to provide Leno with more reliable cover, Runarsson would profit from a loan move elsewhere this January. Having previously opened the door for the 25-year-old to move away this month, Arteta spoke after the Saints win about needing three stoppers.

"“That area of the squad needs three goalkeepers and they need to compete with each other, challenge each other and everyone will get their role,” he told the official Arsenal website."

Not specifically listing Runarsson as one of his three goalkeepers, there is every chance that Arthur Okonkwo could slot in as third choice. The Englishman has been training with the senior side regularly this term and despite his inexperience at this level, can’t be much worse of an option that Runarsson, who looks hopelessly out of his depth.

Somewhere in Europe could suit him for six months. Somewhere like…..Dijon?
