Arsenal Team News

Speaking to the media ahead of Tuesday’s kick-off the general consensus was that Arteta would provide supporters with a string of reassuring updates. Not so much.

Saka, who was left out of the Manchester United draw at the last minute as a precaution, only returned to training with the rest of the squad on the Monday before kick-off, putting him at risk of not making the starting lineup.

The same applied to Kieran Tierney, who it was hoped would recover from a calf strain to resume his place at left-back, with Arteta stating that Saka could feature while Tierney is out.

"He said: “We don’t know yet. Today we’ve got a training session and they haven’t been able to train with us yet, so I think it will be really difficult for them. But I don’t know, we’re going to try to last-minute see how they are feeling. “Kieran is unavailable for Tuesday’s match.”"

Given those updates, it is expected that Cedric will continue in the left-back slot with Nicolas Pepe set for another start up front, with his fellow forward partner expected to be Alexandre Lacazette, who Arteta revealed has recovered from his late collision with Harry Maguire.

As for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, he returned to training on Monday having been granted time off to see an ill family member before then being required to partake in isolation. Arteta stated it was touch and go for him on Tuesday, with it unlikely he’ll start having not trained with the squad for an entire week. Elsewhere, Dani Ceballos and Pablo Mari will be assessed late, while Mat Ryan is out.

Regarding the hosts, Santo is sweating on the fitness of Romain Saiss, who missed the defeat at Crystal Palace while Rayan Ait-Nouri remains out with an abductor problem. At full-back both Marcal and Jonny are sidelined, and up front Raul Jimenez is still recovering from a fractured skull sustained in the reverse fixture. Thankfully, he is recovering well and may even feature this season. Excellent news.
