Arsenal are straight back into Premier League action on Sunday as league leaders Manchester City head to the Emirates Stadium for a huge clash in the Gunners’ pursuit of European football. Here is the match preview.

Fresh(?) from their Europa League exploits in Rome, Arsenal host top of the table Man City in an encounter few expect much joy from. Fielding the same side in consecutive matches for the first time since September 2018, it was clear where Mikel Arteta knew his priorities are.

While his side were left to bemoan missed opportunities against a poor Benfica outfit, the ideal result was not secured as it is all still to play for in the return leg in Athens.

Anyone other than Pep Guardiola’s side three days later would’ve been preferred. Really, anyone else.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

City are an untamed beast in the Premier League this season and bulldozing their way unchallenged to another league title, sitting ten points clear of second place Manchester United after their 17th win in a row was secured with a 3-1 success away at Everton on Tuesday. Terrifying.

Arsenal have a woeful record against the Citizens in recent seasons, not beating them in the top-flight since 2015 and only winning two of the 14 meetings since, both in the FA Cup, and only scoring four goals against them in the previous nine meetings. By contrast, they’ve conceded 22 over that same period.

Hardly inspiring.

Looking at the positives, the side who fell to a 1-0 defeat at the Etihad back in October is an entirely different looking outfit now. There is a clearer identity and they pose much more of a threat. Of course, the caveat is that the exact same can be said of City, who boast the best defensive record in the division and whose 49 goals are only bettered by their cross-city rivals.

What will be a much-changed side on Sunday has its work cut out. Few expect a shock victory, but it isn’t a foregone conclusion.
