Arsenal have almost no chance at climbing back into the European races with the current inconsistencies plaguing the outfit. While victories against Benfica and Leicester are promising, as was some of the play against Manchester City, results like they suffered versus the Citizens, as well as the draw to Burnley, represents real setbacks in a season with so much competition and parity.

Drawing at Turf Moor was simply unacceptable, and the club knew as much. The amount of distraught figures on and off the pitch spoke to the magnitude of missed chances and lost opportunities; and with these mistakes, has come the recognition by this writer that the club must now stake their next season on another impossible run, this time in the Europa League.

‘Consistently inconsistent’ is a term I use often to describe up-and-coming outfits and Arsenal might currently be the epitome of the concept.

While Everton have recently transcended this notion, the Gunners seem mired in what can only be described as the above. How a team can have the talent that is available at the Emirates, while having such disappointing displays in matches where three points are not only expected, but essential for survival.

With three tough Premier League matches coming up, as well as the Europa League last-16 matches, only a run of impressive form on and off the mainland continent can possibly resuscitate the Gunners from this brink of sorts.

Nine points in these matches against Tottenham in the North London Derby, West Ham in another London derby, followed by a match against the currently smarting defending champions, Liverpool, would put Arsenal in a severely different position than they find themselves in currently. While it is not an impossibility, it isn’t likely given our current morale.

This means that success in the Europa League is as crucial as it has ever been for Arsenal. Without a trophy for Mikel Arteta in Europe this year, he will find his team without European competition next season, even with the new third tier European League that begins.
