Arsenal host little known outfit Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday, fresh off the back of a fabulous result over Olympiacos in the Europa League on Thursday.

Just as with their last visit to the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens when they secured a comeback 3-2 win over Benfica, the turnover time until a huge league clash is unforgiving for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Staying overnight in Greece before flying out to London on the Friday, there will be precious little rest time for the players as they prepare for the ultimate fans’ showdown. A fixture that means everything to those of a north London affiliation, whether or not both sides are languishing in mid-table or fighting for the title, the importance of victory and bragging rights remain untouched.

In other fixtures there comes a time where a draw is a result you’d take ahead of kick-off. If Arsenal were bottom and Tottenham top, you still wouldn’t accept that result. Not for this game.

Arsenal vs Tottenham Premier League preview of Sunday’s north London derby

For all the stick Jose Mourinho has received for his brand of football and negative approach to the ‘big games’, the facts are that Sp*rs are in the top four hunt and Arsenal are not.

Whether they’ll secure Champions League football is entirely irrelevant. They’re still involved in a conversation that Arsenal’s name was eliminated from.

They’ve lost fewer games, scored more goals and conceded the same amount as the Gunners in this season’s Premier League, while the also possess two, possibly three, more assets that Arsenal don’t have: world class players.

Man for man Arsenal can absolutely beat Tottenham. But in the case of Mourinho’s side, even if they’re playing poorly they can usually fall back on the brilliance of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, and now Gareth Bale, to take it upon themselves to score from nothing.

Arteta is building towards his vision by adopting the double No. 8/10’s, but the lack of goal threat in the side could prove troublesome as seen in forgettable reverse leg.

As ever, the form book goes out of the window for these clashes, which is a good thing considering Tottenham are in free-scoring mode at present off the back of 13 goals scored in their four previous matches, all of which were victories.
