Arsenal: Purgatory, Premier League style

The Gunners have been a mark of consistency over the previous two decades, and while the last few years are a fall from grace, they are not near the lows other proud clubs have experienced. Queens Park Rangers and Leeds United both come to mind immediately, yet it cannot be denied that for Arsenal supporters, this lull in form has been absolute agony.

It will not last forever, however; with the talent that Arsenal is putting together, the club needs only to find the keys to really unlock the skills of many of the teams most talented players. Aouar, Brandt and Edouard would be three massive signings, yet plenty of talent exists across the world, and it will be expected that Arsenal pick up the pace should they miss European qualification.

Names like Thomas Lemar, Hirving Lozano and Isco – remember them? – and others might produce consternation or joy depending on one’s opinion of each. While so many other (wanted) options remain, choosing the correct one is not a simple measure. This is, however, what both Edu and Arteta are paid, in part at least, to do.

Should Arsenal remain in play on the main continent of Europe, the club will have lucked out, while also, of course, qualifying admirably. There will be no time for a respite, because the added funds and ability of Arsenal will indeed require the club to go all out to get those aforementioned pieces for the next campaign.

A team with those three pieces –  a left-back, too – and a further improved William Saliba will see improvements emerge across all three levels of the team’s chosen shape. They will be welcome since after recent slip-ups, it is clear that improvement will need to be found in the depth chart, as well as the effort of each and every player together and individually.
