Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed the latest update on Bukayo Saka after the Hale Ender was substituted at half-time of the 2-1 north London derby win over Tottenham in the Premier League.

A first half that saw fellow academy graduate Emile Smith Rowe grab the headlines, the 19-year-old put in a solid shift on the inside right against a defensive-minded Sp*rs side, quietly having an impressive outing.

Nonetheless, it’s been evident in the past few fixtures that Bukayo Saka is feeling the impact of congested fixture schedule with little turnover time between fixtures. So vital to the side, his regular outings were always going to result in a drop-off, no matter how minimal, one that was starting to be noticeable in the second leg of the Europa League tie over Benfica.

Behind only Granit Xhaka for minutes played by outfield players, he was brought off in the derby win at the break having felt a tightness in his hamstring.

The decision to withdraw the standout candidate for Arsenal’s Player of the Season didn’t prove detrimental to the team’s performance, as a second half penalty from Alexandre Lacazette sealed the comeback victory.

Saka’s potential absence is nonetheless of concern, and Arteta’s update on the forward’s condition which will be hugely reassuring for all involved.

"“Everybody is more or less OK. He was doing another test. He felt something muscular but he’s been much better and evolving well. We will make the decision this afternoon about what we will do.”"

As far as backup options in the squad go, Nicolas Pepe is primed and ready to slot straight into the side. If anything, he had the better of the halves between the two when he came on against Tottenham. His hunger and drive has been exemplary considering he has only started one of the last eight matches in all competitions, and the game is beautifully set up for someone of his skill set.

It is of course hugely reassuring regarding Saka, who was facing the potential of missing England internationals. However, he needs a rest, and keeping him out of the starting lineup may be a wise idea for Thursday.
