Arsenal Can Sign Denis Zakaria for £17m

Previously priced at a figure above £40m, BILD have reported that a change in circumstances has resulted in Monchengladbach dropping their asking price to a bargain €20m (£17m). And that is the ‘maximum’ the club can hope for.

Citing the financial strain of the coronavirus pandemic and Zakaria being unable to recapture his pre-injury form, the Switzerland international – who has also lost his regular place in the national side – can leave this summer.

Playing a huge part in that is the 24-year-old’s contract situation. Tied down until the summer of 2022, the midfield enforcer does not want to commit to a new deal and Monchengladbach find themselves in a position where a sale must take place.

Retrieving and recycling possession; dropping in between the central defenders to aid build up play; using his pace to cover deep runners; utilising height and strength to win duels and adding presence in both boxes, he has it all.

Fitness and form have obviously set him back considerably, and the worry over that long-term knee problem is something any interested club would have to take into account.

However, what he not only can be but has been is a magnificent No. 6 who is tailor-made to suit the Premier League. Such a cut-price figure is enough to entice any club in Europe.

Arsenal should follow suit.
