We’ve Got Mesut Ozil –  Arsenal 2015/2016

The Mesut Ozil saga finally ended in January with his move to Turkish side Fenerbahce. It was a shame how his time in north London ended, but what he produced on the pitch over seven years will never be forgotten by the fans.

The 2015/2016 Premier League season was a special one when Leicester surprised everyone and ended up being crowned champions that May. While Arsenal never really got close enough to challenge the Foxes for the title, the team finished second in the league with one of the main contributors to the Gunners’ success that season being Ozil. He led the league in assists with 19, while playing provider for strikers Olivier Giroud (16 goals) and Alexis Sanchez (13 goals).

The German set a new Premier League record with an assist in seven straight matches during the fall of 2015.

In December 2015, Ozil created nine scoring opportunities at home to Bournemouth. It was the most opportunities generated by any player in an individual game that season. Arsenal won 2-0 with Ozil assisting defender Gabriel Paulista for the first goal and then scoring the second himself.

Ozil went on to break his own record in February 2016, when he created ten chances in a 0-0 draw at home to Southampton.

The Gunners won their last match of the 2015/2016 season 4-0 at home to Aston Villa. In that game, Ozil set up Giroud with his 19th assist of the season. It currently stands as the second-highest assist total in EPL history just one behind Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne with 20 each.

Özil ended his third season at Arsenal with eight goals and 20 assists in all club competitions, which won him the Arsenal Player of the Season award.

His overall numbers with Arsenal are pretty amazing and make for engrossing reading as, in 184 appearances, he scored 33 goals and created another 54 with assists.
