Aaron Ramsey Ends Arsenal’s Trophy Drought – 2013/2014
Aaron Ramsey played a significant role in Arsenal’s 2013–14 campaign. What a magical individual season this was.
The Welshman got off to a quick start when the Gunners faced Fenerbahce in a home and away Champions League playoff tie, scoring in the 3-0 first-leg win and being named Man of the Match. He then added two more goals back at the Emirates as Arsenal progressed 5-0 on aggregate.
Ramsey’s early season form continued into September, scoring in Arsenal’s 1-2 win in Marseille and providing a brace in a 1-3 win at Sunderland, later being named Man of the Match in a 1-2 win away to Swansea. Three days later, Ramsey set up Mesut Ozil’s goal as the Gunners defeated Napoli 2-0 in Champions League, with his performances leading to midfielder to being named September’s Premier League Player of the Month.
At the end of November, Ramsey scored a brace at his former club Cardiff City. The home fans celebrated their former player who refused to celebrate either goal to show respect. However, in December at West Ham, Ramsey suffered a thigh muscle injury that kept him out of action for three months.
Ramsey returned in time to play a part in Arsenal’s dramatic FA Cup success and become a club great. Arsenal went into the final without having won a trophy in nine seasons and were heavy favorites against Hull, but found themselves behind by two goals after just eight minutes.
Arsenal fought back and sent the match to extra time as Ramsey took center stage with a goal in the 109th minute. The Gunners hung on and ended their trophy drought winning the club’s 12th FA Cup.
For the season Ramsey scored 16 goals in all competitions and contributed seven assists. He was named:
- Arsenal Player of the Month in August, September, October, and November
- Arsenal Player of the Season
- A runner up in the London Player of the Year voting.
