In a staunch riposte of the breakaway European Super League, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin is seeking legal advice to ban ESL clubs, including Arsenal, from the Europa League and Champions League this season.

Holding an emergency meeting the day after Sunday evening’s announcement that 12 of Europe’s top clubs are launching the Super League, Aleksander Čeferin has joined the widespread scathing criticism of the plan.

Initially meant to hold plans that would discuss the latest evolution of the Champions League, the Super League announcement has overshadowed those discussions and prompted serious allegations and uncertainty across the footballing world.

Arsenal are one of 12 ‘founding members’ to confirm their intentions to join the European Super League. The Premier League’s ‘big six’ – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Manchester United and Tottenham – are being joined by La Liga trio Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Serie A trio Juventus, Inter and AC Milan in founding the new competition, one that will rival current UEFA competitions.

UEFA threaten to ban Arsenal from Europa League this season and all European Super League clubs from Champions League

The Premier League has since threatened points deductions, FIFA has stated it will ban participating players from FIFA competitions (namely the World Cup and European Championships), and now UEFA have shown their hand.

"“We’re still assessing with our legal team but we will take all the sanctions that we can and we will inform you as soon we can,” Ceferin said, as quoted by Reuters. “My opinion is that as soon as possible they have to be banned from all our competitions and the players from all our competitions.“UEFA and the football world stand united against disgraceful and self-serving proposal we have seen in the last 24 hours for a select few clubs in Europe motivated by greed. We are all united against this nonsense of a project.”"

With every side of this argument being valiant in their stances, the eventualities are all up in the air. How much can be believed, how much is a strong front and what could actually happen?

Ceferin’s seething rage is no secret, and his threats of banning those involved from UEFA competitions this season would see Arsenal eliminated from the Europa League on the eve of their semi-final clashes with Villarreal.

dark. Next. Grim European Super League

Even if Arsenal win the Europa League, there will be no Champions League lying in wait. If they are banned, no supporter can be begrudged. It will be exactly what they deserve.
