Arsenal have been on the trail of Yves Bissouma since before the beginning of this season, and he’s been on the fans’ wanted list for even longer. Ahead of the summer transfer window, Brighton have set their asking price.

While the news is dominated with matters away from the pitch, those on the turf at Arsenal are majorly fixated and what can be done in the summer to improve the team.

As Mikel Arteta’s vision grows clearer, so does the realisation that to make Arsenal the force he wishes them to be, that shared by the fans, better quality players must be brought in. Often searching too deeply for nuance, it’s a simple fact all are on board with: the squad is not strong enough.

When fully fit the starting lineup can be, yet even then improvements can be made while the bench could be stripped and replaced almost entirely. Granit Xhaka inevitably falls into the equation as opinion remains divided on whether he is the suitable long-term partner to Thomas Partey. Whether he is or he isn’t, depth in midfield is something the Gunners do not possess.

Across the Premier League, few players entice in that position more than Yves Bissouma. Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leicester, Monaco and Arsenal are all pursuing his signature, one that won’t come cheap.

The Athletic reveal that Brighton will only entertain offers over £40m, with the Malian having two years left on his deal and the Seagulls under no pressure to sell. Their stance may have differed upon relegation, but their place in the top-flight is not under serious threat.

His overall stats are a slight drop off from last season but still supremely impressive. As a sitting No. 6 who is given license to carry the ball (a more frequent this campaign), outstanding defensive work rate, tackle success and ball retention have him among the upper echelons for players in his position this season.

Tactically he’s significantly more aware, linking play with increased success and even taking on more shots – albeit not always to great success, which, funnily enough, is similar to what Arsenal have in their No. 18.

It goes without saying that securing Champions League football is paramount to the Gunners’ hopes, even if the 24-year-old is an Arsenal fan.
