Arsenal are back in Premier League action as they host relegation doomed West Brom at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, aiming to bounce back from their European heartbreak. Here is the match preview.

We say ‘bounce back’, but there is no sudden recovery from Thursday night. What wounds remain from that destructive evening will require more than three points against the second worst side in the Premier League to heal.

That is all that Arsenal can do now. Win football matches between now and the end of the season – all four of them – and show some modicum of fight building into the summer. Many of these players’ futures are decided, but there are some fighting for what is to come, whether at Arsenal or not.

Character has been lacking all season and it’s time to see who really cares about Arsenal Football Club. Who wants to be part of the reset button that has been smashed to pieces following events of Thursday night. Changes need to be made with the management, executives and ownership, three areas the players have no part in. All they can do is play for the badge, we know which ones will.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

As for the manager, he has nowhere to hide.

His job may be secure in this project, yet even the ownership (or Edu or Vinai or whoever is in charge of anything) may feel they’re losing this battle if Arsenal sink further than the depths they find themselves in.

It goes without saying that nothing short of victory will do. Even victory at this stage is hollow and does little to the cause, but it’s the bare essential as the coming months will shape the future of the club.

West Brom are fighting for their lives, albeit a bare knuckle boxing match with two grizzly bears awoken from their hibernation. Their plight looks certain but so did Fulham’s, and they managed to escape the Emirates Stadium with a point.

Second bottom vs ninth in the Premier League table. Play a team that will be there next season, not a side full of wantaways or inevitable castaways.
