Arsenal have released their new away kit for the 2021/22 campaign, with adidas once again sticking one in the top corner with a divine throwback effort. Shame about the actual football.

With the season drawing to a close – thankfully, for most –  now is the time when fresh attire is released ahead of the coming campaign as clubs usually don their new strips for a fixture or two. Arsenal memorably did so when they lifted the FA Cup trophy in their 2-1 win over Chelsea last season.

This time it’s the away kit that has been announced early, as the Gunners have issued a throwback top with a huge nod to the 1971 double-winning side. The famous yellow strip had one key feature which has been implemented into the design, the cannon.

The cannon has been on Arsenal kits since the 1920s in various different formats, but none were loved quite as much by supporters as the simplistic edition seen in the 1970s. Charlie George’s memorable extra-time winning goal against Liverpool at Wembley remains a fond memory.

With a shirt colour described as ‘pearl citrine pale yellow’, the kit has a navy and red trim with the iconic adidas stripes going down the shoulder. Fans will notice one key alteration, however, the cannon is facing the other way compared to that strip. This may annoy a few, even if it’s faced every which way throughout history.

Interestingly, it will be a full yellow strip from top the bottom. The shorts will be the same colour, as will the socks, unlike the blue shorts donned in the kit this new strip is a nod to.

Once again the German manufacturer has knocked this one out of the park. Sadly, that’s about all there is to cheer for.

Of course, the question is, do you buy it? The KSE ownership will be licking their lips as fans line up to pay £100 for the authentic strip on the Arsenal Direct site, just as they did for the bruised banana throwback that sold out in Arsenal shops within hours.

If supporters want to hurt the owners in their pockets, boycotting fixtures and stopping all purchasing of merchandise is their best course of action. Actually doing so is another matter, and it doesn’t help that adidas have been such a drastic improvement on Puma.

On Wednesday Arsenal will wear their new kit as they travel to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
