Kieran Tierney is going to be the new Arsenal captain once Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng departs the club and you’ve got to travel years back in time before supporters were this excited about who would be next to don the armband.

Prior to Tierney pocketing the entire England national football team on Friday, glorious news emerged that the Scotsman has agreed to put pen to paper on a new five-year contract at the club he joined in the summer of 2019.

That £25m looks like being some of the best money the club has spent since the Emirates Stadium became Arsenal’s new home. The likelihood of £50m being splashed on Ben White demonstrates just how shrewd of a signing the left-back will turn out to be.

Against England Tierney put in a captain’s performance, despite not being his nation’s captain. For Arsenal Tierney has put in numerous captain’s performances, despite not being the club captain. But he will be, and he thoroughly deserves it.

It is not confirmed, of course, but there is no doubting in anyone’s mind that he will assume that role. None at all.

Beyond being loved and adored for his battling spirit, never-say-die attitude, short sleeves in the snow and willingness to stand in front of the cameras post-match after a poor result and face the criticism, he’s a magnificent footballer.

Harry Kane didn’t get a sniff against Scotland; Raheem Sterling was nullified throughout and Reece James was so deep in Tierney’s pocket he’s probably spinning round the washing machine as we speak.

Having just come back from another injury, one that kept him out against the Czech Republic, to then put in a masterful performance as he did is precisely what we’ve come to expect from the defender. He rarely ever has bad games. Billy Gilmour scooped the man of the match award but it could easily have gone to Tierney.

When the time comes for him to put the armband on, supporters will be proud to see him lead the side out. Tierney will be a captain that inspires, encourages and unites; a Tony Adams and not a William sodding Gallas.

Gifted enough to play for any side in the Premier League, getting him tied down long-term is a magnificent move from the club because any side in Europe needing a left-back would be foolish not to make an approach.

Arsenal are lucky to have him. What a player, what a guy.
