The summer transfer window is a time for unexpected delirium, head scratching confusion and mental resilience. For Arsenal, like so many clubs, what emerges from the rumour mill can be hilariously misinformed or sneakily exciting.

Already in 2021 have supporters been subject to some intriguing murmurs from across the continent. Some have been batted away in quick time while others have got the blood pumping, whether positively or negatively.

Ben White, for example, is going to cost Arsenal £50m and looks set to be ahead of William Saliba in the pecking order, who himself required £27m to sign. Looking at it from a glass half full perspective that’s some ambition being shown from Arsenal to add depth, while if the glass is half empty it’s a shedload of money being spent in the wrong place.

Crucial about it though, is that it’s actually happening and not some figment of the imagination coughed up by a man wearing a fedora pounding into a typewriter in a room so full a cigarette smoke you can barely make out the time on the clock.

In Arsenal’s case, they’re becoming subject to some incredible rumours both in legitimacy and in volume. Due to the scale of the overhaul taking place, every position in the squad from goalkeeper to striker is free game for the rumour mill.

It’s resulted in a mixed bag of links so far, less than two weeks since the window officially opened, although there have been three to emerge via one major outlet that really take the biscuit.

Mikel Arteta needs a whole lot to take place in north London both in terms of incomings and outgoings, but these three? Really?

While you can never say never in any transfer market, there is something slightly…off, going on here. Interesting? Let’s dissect.

Arsenal, Jonjoe Kenny

Hector Bellerin, while still without a certain suitor, is set to leave Arsenal this window as he embarks on a new stage of his career.

It is no secret that Arsenal are on the hunt for a replacement in that department, with Calum Chambers a solid squad option and Cedric Soares having fallen way down the pecking order under Arteta. Links have emerged to a number of right-backs including Max Aarons, Tariq Lamptey and Zeki Celik, with the Daily Mail since weighing in with their own name who apparently has been discussed in north London:

Jonjoe Kenny.

Yes, really. The Mail have attributed Arsenal with having internal talks to discuss Jonjoe Kenny. Now this isn’t just some Gunners snobbery, but more a laughable link that is nothing short of total and utter tosh.

Kenny spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Schalke which, it’s fair to say, didn’t go too well, before joining Celtic on loan in February this year where he looked hopefully out of his depth in the Scottish Premiership.

Some transfer rumours can be tougher than others to decipher. In this instance, however, it’s a case of ‘homegrown+Premier+League+enter’ and see what comes up.
