Aaron Ramsey back at the Emirates has been a story well discussed among Arsenal quarters. Two seasons in Juventus later and his time in Italy already looks up. Having failed to fully break through under both Maurizio Sarri and Andrea Pirlo, that doesn’t look like changing under returning boss Massimiliano Allegri.

It’s one of those romantic returns that can cloud judgement. Arsenal are in desperate need of an effective box-to-box midfielder with an eye for goal who will hit the ground running – and ideally not be jetting off to AFCON in the winter like half of the team – so who better?

Facing an exodus of up to five of the current six central midfield options – not all five will leave but there is every chance any combination of them will – it’s the area of the pitch in most dire need of amending.

Which is where Aaron Ramsey comes into the equation. His departure left a sour taste in the mouth due to the commonplace contractual failings of the club rearing its ugly head once again. Allowed to run down his contract – there are conflicting reports on who wanted what – he left on a free transfer to Serie A, earning a substantial wage to play for a top Champions League side.

Deservedly the level his talent is capable of, it just hasn’t worked out. A Serie A title and a Coppa Italia may argue one way, but 24 league starts certainly doesn’t.

Set for the exit door, the calls for Ramsey to return to the carpet have grown in decibel levels. Not aided by frequent rumours emanating from the Italian press suggesting that it’s Ramsey’s ‘dream’ to move back to north London and that Arsenal are growing keener by the day on the idea, the Welshman’s agent has spoken up.

"Replying to a tweet that relayed ‘information’ from Italy that Ramsey is angling for a move back, David Baldwin said: “I’m sorry but can you stop making things up please. There is not a shred of truth in your tweet.”"

There goes the nail in that coffin.

But, is there any way it could work? There is, and while Baldwin shut down the rumours, if there was any way that Ramsey could return to Arsenal it would have to be on the right terms. As it is, an injury-prone 30-year-old with astronomical wages is a deal the club should steer well clear of.

If done correctly though, Ramsey would be welcomed back with open arms.
