Arsenal handed massive Willian transfer escape route
Arsenal are entering the manic stage of the summer transfer window in which the calm becomes the storm. As far as incomings go, it’s been busy for the Gunners who have seen five new faces walk through the doors. In regards to outgoings, there is work aplenty to complete.
Noticeable already is that the wheels are starting to spin. Lucas Torreira, who has not kicked a ball for Arsenal in over a year, is edging closer to a move to Fiorentina as a loan bid with either an option or obligation to buy nears completion.
Elsewhere, Eddie Nketiah is the subject of firm interest from Crystal Palace who are willing to offer £10m for the striker, a figure Arsenal should be snapping hands off for. They’re riskily holding out for closer to £20m.
More will go which hopefully prompts more arrivals. Those two departing not only boosts the transfer kitty and reduces the unhealthy Premier League wage bill but also crucially frees up space in the squad for first team additions.
Arsenal handed massive Willian transfer escape route with Corinthians making an official offer to the Brazilian during the summer window
And in the case of Willian, one of the best aspects of his potential departure is that he needn’t be replaced. Given there is no European football this term rotation is no longer urgently required, and with wide forward options already filled up with Gabriel Martinelli, Nicolas Pepe, Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka, his very welcome exit changes little.
Will it happen? It’s been mooted all summer and there is no hiding the club’s desire to move him on as well as Willian’s own pining to depart, hence why an official bid arriving from Corinthians is like music to the ears.
Music that can’t be turned up full, keeping the neighbours awake though. Not just yet.
As per Fabrizio Romano, the Brazilian side have lodged a bid, one the 33-year-old is mulling over. Well known is that he’s settled in London, but at this stage, with his form, age, and his monumental wages, beggars can’t be choosers.
Arsenal certainly won’t be thinking twice.
News has since began to filter out from all across the UK press and elsewhere that the deal will be a free transfer, and that Corinthians are growing increasingly confident of securing their man. This, ladies and gentleman, may very well be it.
Say what you want about Arsenal Football Club, but Arteta insisted that this window would be ‘unprecedented’. Selling a player on 180k-per-week one year into his three-year contract harbouring ambitions of Champions League football is, undeniably, the epitome of unprecedented.
Arsenal, we salute you.
