What Does Noa Lang Transfer Interest From Arsenal Mean?

In the words of Ron Burgundy, that escalated quickly.

Arsenal, who were not interested in any wide players over the recent summer window – with the exception of Emi Buendia who likely would have morphed into a No. 10/No. 8 type – are now suddenly ‘preparing’ a £25m offer for this 22-year-old Dutchman.

Looking at his ability alone there is no surprise in Europe’s interest. Lang is widely, and quite rightly, regarded as the best player in the Belgian leagues at present and Ajax’s decision to loan then sell last October continues to be a head scratcher.

As for suitability, do Arsenal need a wide player at present? Where Lang fits in can only be as a replacement for one of Martinelli or Pepe, and more likely the latter as he jets off to AFCON that month and will finish the season in the classic two-year contract territory where it is either sell or renew.

Priorities need to be set, however, and with striker, central midfielder (and goalkeeper which will come up too once Bernd Leno leaves), then eyeing a £25m move for a player that Club Brugge are looking to recoup around £34m seems like an odd use of resources after a record breaking summer.

That said, Arsenal are fully behind Arteta and willing to fund his overhaul, so nothing is out of the question. Equally, the report states this Premier League January window effort would be with an eye on jumping the queue for his services, in a sort of ‘get em while they’re hot’ situation. Lang’s rapid rise, and now international status, is only going to increase the clamour.

As the wait commences for more concrete links to emerge the rest of Europe can sit back and enjoy watching the Dutchman in action in the Champions League. He’s been superb already.
