Midfielders

Thomas Partey (CM) – There has been a huge debate about why or if Thomas Partey is struggling for form, whether it be the change of role, expectations being too high, his fitness levels still not being there or the simple matter of him being an inconsistent midfielder.

The one certainty is, however, that he will start in this match. He bossed United at Old Trafford last season.

Sambi Lokonga (CM) – Many peoples’ pick for man of the match against Newcastle, Sambi has made more progressive passes per 90 minutes than anyone else in the Arsenal team this season and his importance to the midfield continues to grow. Behind Smith Rowe and Saka he’s also made the most progressive carries.

Arsenal’s build up play is distinctly faster this season and he’s played a huge part in that.

Martin Odegaard (AM) – This feels like a game for Alexandre Lacazette. Arteta bringing him back in to provide some bite as the second striker/attacking midfielder comes across as a decision he’d make.

Then again, fielding Odegaard against Newcastle also hinted towards a longer term move. By letting the Norwegian get some match sharpness back into his game, and he did grow into the match, sets him up better for Thursday.
