Arsenal have no football to play until they travel to Wolves in February, giving them plenty of time to tickle everyone’s tastebuds in the transfer market.

After trudging to a 0-0 draw against Burnley, their fifth match in the month of January that they failed to win, the situation calls for serious action. A midfielder and a striker are paramount.

As well as coming to a conclusion with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since he last kicked a ball for the club on December 6, including being stripped of the captaincy, contracting Covid again, going to AFCON and not playing, dealing with health scares and having offers lodged for him.

Given he is now fit and well, it’s the last point that is most important. Al Nassr and Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia have made bids to sign the striker this window, the former including an obligation to buy after an initial loan with the latter instead an option.

Arsenal drop Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang transfer hint with striker not set to join club for training in Dubai amid January interest

Arsenal will only recoup around £6.5m in the summer for the 32-year-old, but they will get his wages off the bill and that is of huge benefit to them.

The elephant in the room has always been whether or not the deal suits Aubameyang, and David Ornstein has provided an unwelcome update on that. If he is to leave Arsenal his preference would be to stay in a top league in Europe to continue competing at the highest level.

Aubameyang is ambitious and wants to prove a lot of people wrong, which while good for him, is less so for Arsenal. Despite there being interest from across Europe, including Paris Saint-Germain, the likelihood of the Gunners finding a suitor to cover his wages like the current offers is next to impossible.

When wages are going to be ‘a problem’ for a club like PSG then you should know that you’ve been doing something terribly wrong all this time.

But, with the report stating that he’s not set to jet off with the squad to Dubai on Thursday, it does drop a large hint that it’s going to be a frantic finale to this window in regards to his future. Even if the Gunners don’t succeed in securing a replacement, finding a way to reintegrate Aubameyang from a tactical and fitness standpoint as well as an emotional point of view appears long and difficult.

Continued exemptions from the squad even for training hammers home the seriousness of the club’s disposition. If there was going to be any attempt to rebuild bridges, one would have thought that warm-weather training in the relaxed atmosphere of their Dubai camp might have been ideal.
