Arsenal: 3 players that need to step up after Aubameyang’s departure
By Krish Ajmani
1. Alexandre Lacazette
Arteta’s search for a focal point for the attack continues. And until he finds the striker that fits his ideal vision for the team, Lacazette will continue to start up top. The Frenchman, like Pepe, is one of the more experienced members of the squad and he will be crucial to the coming run in before his time at the club inevitably comes to an end.
Lacazette has never been a prolific striker at Premier League level. The qualities he brings to build up can be overstated. He drops deep effectively enough but lacks the threat on the ball to force opposing defenders to commit and follow him into midfield. Yet with no incomings, he will have to perform better than he has in the past.
Xhaka and Partey will be back in the side, providing some much-needed midfield stability, and with more calm on the ball and more nous off it, Lacazette should be able to stay higher up the pitch. Positioning the striker closer to lethal wide players Saka and Martinelli will help them move the ball faster and closer to the opposing goal. While Lacazette will certainly not be challenging for the Golden Boot, he has a huge role to play for the rest of the season.
So much trust has been placed in him.
Aubameyang’s goals and goal threat will be a big miss, even if his output did falter in his last season or two at the club. The summer window will be the next chance Arsenal have to strengthen the striker position, meaning that Arteta will have to use his options wisely as he fights to bring Champions League back to the Emirates.
