Arsenal enact revenge against struggling Brentford
By Trent Nelson
Arsenal were taken by surprise as this current Premier League campaign got underway at the Brentford Community Stadium in west London. That Gunners squad was ravaged by injuries and illness, and played like a team that was not yet sure of itself or what its composition would be.
All these months later, however, and that Arsenal side was nowhere to be seen on Saturday. When the Gunners hosted Brentford this time, they held the match in the palm of their hand the entire way. Another three points was secured courtesy of Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka, alongside a coherent attacking and defensive display.
The Gunners dominated possession, registered all the shots and, eventually, took charge of the scoresheet too; while another clean sheet for Arsenal was not maintained, it is the three points that count most. It is those points that bring the Gunners both a bit of revenge on Brentford, as well as closer to the top four of the Premier League table.
With another draw by West Ham, this squad has a real chance to put distance between both Manchester United, West Ham and co in the coming weeks and months. This young, dynamic team must stay focused and take these opportunities, however, or else their rivals’ slip-ups count for nothing.
Arsenal must continue their momentum against Wolves after vital Premier League victory over Brentford
The next match in just a few days against Wolves will be more difficult than this one just passed, or the meeting with that team just weeks ago. This Wolves team is in a strong position. That this Arsenal team was able to beat them even with just ten men towards the end of that match remains an impressive feat, but the Gunners will have to play better than they did to take another three points.
Should they be able to, they will find themselves in a great position to take a top four position on the league table once some games are made up; in matches against Tottenham, Manchester United and West Ham, the Gunners will have a real opportunity to distance themselves from those teams further.
But getting through Wolves will lead into a stretch featuring both Watford and Leicester City, as well as Liverpool and Aston Villa. Those first two matches after the second Wolves match are really must wins – all of them are – because this team is superior to those units at this point in time. The Liverpool affair will be most difficult.
These Gunners have yet to realize how to accomplish that this season, yet should they be able to in March, the confidence and ambition of this outfit will only increase and feel more realistic for them to actually achieve. Aston Villa will not be easy either despite their dip in form, but with the momentum built from what would be a sizeable winning streak since the unfortunate Burnley draw, it is reasonable to say that the team would feel confident going into that match as well.
That would leave April as a crucial, make-or-break type of month for this team. Should Tottenham not be placed in March – one would imagine it would be placed in April or May to boost the viewing figures – which makes the potential gambit of matches much more formidable than that which we would have seen in March.
It could very well feature matches against the likes of Manchester United, West Ham, Tottenham, as well as tough games against Brighton, Crystal Palace and the surging Southampton. That would be a very tough road to undertake, but one that would have to see real composure and endurance shine out of this Arsenal team for them to procure good, positive results out of this tough run of matches.
But that is all the future, you know. The present has seen this team dominate Brentford, and they must look to do the same against Bruno Lage’s Wolves, who are surely still fuming that they were beaten by this team last time. They will want three points of their own, and to bring Arsenal back to reality in the process.
Will these young Gunners allow for it to happen? We will see.
