Arsenal predicted lineup vs Southampton: Xhaka left-back, Lacazette out?

Midfielders

Martin Odegaard (AM) – Sitting deeper in the first half against Brighton meant there was nobody instigating the press for Arsenal, resulting in laborious build-up out from the back that made life so easy for the visitors.

Odegaard comes alive when he’s on the ball and getting him closer to the opposition goal is key. However, it’s possible he’ll be playing something more closely resembling a double pivot role.

Sambi Lokonga (DM) – As soon as Xhaka came into midfield in the second half against the Seagulls Sambi came to life. Straight from the off there were driving runs in possession through the lines and speed to his distribution. Will he get a partner? It depends how deep Odegaard drops.

Emile Smith Rowe (AM) – One of the more disappointing players on the park last time out.

Is he generally more suited to a wide forward role where he has grass to run into and combinations to build working inwards instead of outwards? The data available hints that he’s a stronger player starting on the exterior, although Arteta may feel he needs all the minutes he can get to build up some form.
