Gabriel’s improvement at Arsenal calls future into question
By Krish Ajmani
Aside from the two most recent Arsenal games the defense has been incredibly solid. This improvement in the more gritty side of the game has largely been down to the new signings.
Benjamin White has proven to be an impressive and worthwhile signing. He possesses all of the strengths of a modern center-back capable of defending in the channels as well as driving forward with the ball.
Takehiro Tomiyasu has provided stability on the right hand side, tucking in as a center-back before slotting into midfield to create the numerical advantages Arteta desires. Further back, Aaron Ramsdale has given Arsenal a threat on the ball from the keeper position as well as adding the much-needed energy and desire to keep a clean sheet.
While new signings will always catch the eye to begin with, Gabriel’s improvement and evolution has been nothing short of astounding. He came into the side on the opening day against Fulham last season, barely speaking a word of English and therefore unable to communicate with his teammates – all while adapting to the Premier League and its demands. On top of that, he had to play with David Luiz.
Gabriel’s improvement at Arsenal calls future into question as Barcelona eye summer transfer swoop for Brazilian center-back
This season, however, the Brazilian center-back has come into his own. He has looked far more assertive, not just in his play on the ball but off of it as well. While he may still be struggling with the language (it is unclear just how proficient he is although he’s thought to have taken big steps), he does not hesitate to shout at his teammates and organize what has increasingly become his defense. His passing has grown by leaps and bounds and he continues to be an aerial threat in both boxes.
His level has fallen off a bit recently. The mistake for the first goal conceded to Crystal Palace shows his inexperience. While the Brazilian has become one of the first names on the teamsheet, fans must remember that he is still only 24 years old and just his second season in the Premier League. He is still learning and developing his craft. His development will not always be linear.
Yet his advances thus far already have clubs monitoring his situation. Sport and football.london claims that there is interest originating from Spain with Barcelona placing Gabriel at the top of their wishlist. There is no way to know how true these rumors are, but their emergence from UK and Spanish sources gives them some credence.
Regardless of the veracity of the interest, Arsenal must remain aware of possible situations while maintaining efficiency in their dealings. Contracts must be offered well in advance to ensure poor sales or moves away can be avoided.
Edu has largely just paid players to leave. How he keeps players’ values high and how well he sells members of the squad will be crucial to him staying in his role as technical director.
Gabriel should undoubtedly stay at the club, and he’s said himself how at home he feels at Arsenal, and the club do not want him to go anywhere. At some point, however, players will leave the club and it is important that the funds received are commensurate with their ability. Get Gabriel tied down further. No more player giveaways please.
