Arsenal defender Dinos Mavropanos has joined Bundesliga club Stuttgart on a permanent deal after he spent two years on loan at the German club.

Mavropanos was one of Arsene Wenger’s last signings as manager as he joined the club from Greek outfit PAS Giannina in January 2018. The defender initially showed a hint of promise but he made just eight appearances during his first two years at the club.

Mavropanos was never admired by Unai Emery nor Mikel Arteta and, as a result, he was sent on loan to Nuremberg in January 2020 before joining Stuttgart that summer.

The Greek centre-back has since impressed for the Bundesliga side, and his permanent transfer to Die Schwaben was confirmed on Thursday.

Arsenal confirm Konstantinos Mavropanos’ permanent transfer to Bundesliga side Stuttgart

In an official statement regarding Mavropanos’ transfer, Arsenal wrote: “Dinos Mavropanos has joined Bundesliga side Vfb Stuttgart in a permanent transfer.

“The 24-year-old defender has spent the past two seasons on loan with Stuttgart, where he has become an integral part of the German team’s squad.”

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported earlier this week that Stuttgart, who dramatically preserved their place in the Bundesliga last weekend, had paid an initial loan fee of £500,000 to bring Mavropanos to Germany. They’re now set to spend a further £3m plus £1.5m in bonuses to complete his permanent transfer.

Thus, Arsenal will make a minor profit after signing the Greek defender for less than £2m over four years ago. The Gunners will also reportedly receive 10% of the fee garnered from Mavropanos’ next sale and West Ham have been linked with a summer move.

While he failed to impose himself in north London, the 24-year-old emerged as one of Stuttgart’s standout performers during his two-year loan. Although, he was a regular for a defence that conceded the fifth-most goals in the Bundesliga last season. The centre-back did, however, score a career-high five goals of his own (at the right end).
