6 moments that defined Arsenal’s 2021/22 season

6. Newcastle end Champions League hopes
Perhaps Arsenal’s biggest game of the last five or six years. In a match they had to win, nothing other than three points would do as Spurs had defeated Burnley 1-0 the day before.
What followed was Arsenal’s worst performance of the year – topping their capitulation in N17. The Magpies were irresistible. Newcastle smashed them in every area you can think of and, in truth, should have won by more than the eventual 2-0 scoreline.
What the result did was puncture any confidence the young Arsenal side had and meant that Tottenham were in the driving seat heading into the final day of the season. They needed just a point a Carrow Road to secure Champions League football.
Again, like the Tottenham game days before, it was all there for Arsenal to stand up and be counted, but they failed miserably. Some pointed out the youthfulness of the squad, but if we are being honest, the pressure got to the playing group.
After having a seemingly unsurmountable advantage, Arsenal squandered it in just four days and was then made to be content with a Europa League place.
