3 reasons why Arsenal were right to extend Mohamed Elneny

The Gunners have agreed to a new deal with the Egyptian, tying him to the club for at least the next season with an option for another.

A collective groan of discontent could be heard for some sections of the Arsenal fanbase when the club announced they had re-signed Mohamed Elneny to a new deal. However, a one-year extension with an option for a further year looks like good business.

As expected, many Gunners fans saw the extension for Elneny as a poor start to the club’s summer ambitions. However, it constitutes good business, and I’ll tell you why.

1. Provides excellent squad depth

With Arsenal now competing on the European front, although not the one we wanted, that means more games. Perhaps more importantly, that means a Thursday night game to then follow up with a league game on the weekend.

Mikel Arteta will need to have squad players who can come in and do a job for the team. Whether that is resting his star players from a Thursday night Europa League game in Romania to focus on the league or vice-versa, the entire squad will need to be utilised.

Then god forbid the same thing happens again this season on the injury front. Thomas Partey has proven to be in and out of the team like a yoyo and having a player like Elneny who can slot in a do a job, while not flashy, he is another body in the midfield at Arteta’s disposal.
