Some of Arsenal’s best captains have been centre-backs. Tony Adams, Per Mertesacker and Martin Keown, we could add another to the list in Gabriel.

The 24-year-old embodies everything a fanbase would want in a captain. A superb player, tough, vocal on the pitch, and leads by example time and time again.

While still coming to grips with the Premier League’s style of play last season, the Brazilian was in great form as he and Benjamin White forged a superb understanding at the heart of Arsenal’s defence.

It is very easy to see our No.6 with the armband next season, and he has everything needed to be successful in the role. After an up and down first season with the Gunners, Gabriel firmly established himself as a bonafide starter during the 2021/22 campaign.

The 24-year-old played 35 Premier League games in a row after missing the opening two games through a knee injury and was not in the squad that lost 5-0 to Manchester City. After that, he was a staple of the Gunners’ defence, and he is a goal-scoring threat, too, finding the back of the net five times last season – a career-high return.

The Brazilian would be a brilliant choice to lead the club into its next chapter.
