2 Arsenal stars earn PFA Young Player of the Year nominations
I like it, I like it, I like it, I like it,
Woah, Woah, here we go,
Saka and Emile Smith Roweeeeee.
Fan favourites Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe have both been nominated for the 2021/22 PFA Young Player of the award following their impressive seasons at Arsenal.
Saka, who was nominated for the same award in 2020/21 after contributing to nine league goals, was the Gunners’ leading Premier League scorer last time out. The England international scored a career-high 11 times.
Smith Rowe, meanwhile, scored ten times in the Premier League having enjoyed an incredibly productive end to 2021. The crafty creator broke through at the Emirates midway through the 2020/21 campaign and his resurgence brought life to a faltering Arsenal season. However, he wasn’t among the PFA Young Player of the Year nominees on that occasion as Phil Foden edged out Saka for the award.
The Manchester City starlet is the favourite to claim the award once again.
Bukayo Saka & Emile Smith Rowe earn 2021/22 PFA Young Player of the Year nominations
Arsenal duo Saka and Smith Rowe are shortlisted alongside Conor Gallagher, Reece James, Jacob Ramsey and Foden for the 2021/22 award.
Foden has already been named the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season after he contributed to 14 goals in City’s title-winning campaign. Some might argue, though, that Saka enjoyed a superior individual campaign than Foden.
Saka scored more goals (11 to nine), notched more assists (seven to five), made more appearances (38 to 28), and registered more shot-creating actions per 90 minutes (4.29 to 3.51) than his compatriot last season. Foden, though, will still be a worthy winner and he could join Ryan Giggs, Robbie Fowler, Wayne Rooney and Dele Alli as a two-time PFA Young Player of the Year.
However, if a surprise was to be sprung and Saka pips Foden to the award, the young Gunner will become the sixth Arsenal player to win. Tony Adams (1987), Paul Merson (1989), Nicolas Anelka (1999), Cesc Fabregas (2008) and Jack Wilshere (2011) all claimed the prestigious honour during their respective Arsenal careers.
