Could Arsenal move for free agent Paulo Dybala?
By Adam Schultz
With his contract running down, Paulo Dybala has stated that a move to the Premier League is appealing to him, and Arsenal have been linked with the star forward.
It’s that time of the year when Arsenal are linked with just about every player on the planet. Thus, it’s hard to decipher which rumours hold merit and which ones don’t.
Juventus forward Paulo Dybala has been linked with a move to Arsenal for a while now, and nothing is yet to come of it (surprise, surprise). But with the Argentine’s contract with the Italian giants due to expire, a chance for Arsenal to swoop in remains.
With Manchester City star Gabriel Jesus the top name on Mike Arteta’s wish list for the summer, it is not known if a move for Dybala has even crossed the Spaniard’s mind. Nevertheless, nabbing the 28-year-old for nothing could prove appealing.
Could Arsenal make a move for impending free agent Paulo Dybala?
The lack of Champions League football is likely to be a huge deterrent for the Argentinian, but his recent comments about where he would like to ply his trade would have made Arteta and Edu’s ears prick up.
Dybala, who is now a free agent, spoke to ESPN about his future and stated that he would like to know more about the other leagues across Europe, including the Premier League.
The 28-year-old said:
"“I am quite calm, the people who work with me are taking care of things.“In Italy I am very comfortable. I would still like to know other leagues like Premier, Liga, but I’m happy in Italy. I’ve been there for 10 years, I know the tournament and now they treat me as if I were Italian.“I am focused on the national team, I have to think with a calm head for my future. I have not decided anything, my agent thinks about it, I have to think about Argentina.”"
Would Dybala be appealing to Arsenal?
Without question, he would be. Adding a striker with 115 Juventus goals to his name is one thing, but signing him for nothing (yes, the wages will be big, I know) is another huge reason why La Joya is such an attractive proposition. Being just 28-years-old points to a player who still has at least three to four years of top-quality football ahead of him.
For Juventus this season, the diminutive forward scored 15 goals and registered four assists in 39 games across all competitions. Decent enough numbers and something that Arteta and co could work with.
His ability to play right across the front three could also prove to be enticing for Arteta; such is his want for players to be versatile. It is all there for Arsenal as it ticks three boxes for the club.
Cost-effective, approaching his prime, and still world-class; Paulo Dybala is the sort of player the Gunners could do with.
Whether it happens or not remains to be seen as wages are likely to be a significant stumbling block along with no Champions League, but it is certainly a thought that Arsenal should at least entertain.
