Official: Arsenal confirm signing of Brazilian winger Marquinhos from Sao Paulo
Brazilian winger Marquinhos has been confirmed as Arsenal’s first signing of the summer.
The teenager arrives from Sao Paulo as an unknown commodity to many, but he’s expected to join the first team for pre-season ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. Marquinhos has made just 41 appearances at a senior level in his homeland, notching seven goal contributions in the process.
Wolves were also believed to be in for the winger; claiming that the Brazilian had signed a pre-contract agreement to join the West Midlands club. There were some reports of a legal battle ensuing, but Arsenal appear to be in the clear as they confirmed the signing of the 19-year-old on Monday afternoon.

We simply don’t know what to expect from Marquinhos, but it worked out pretty well the last time the Gunners signed an unknown commodity from Brazil. Gabriel Martinelli was signed from the second-tier outfit Ituano back in 2018 and has gone on to establish himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young wide players.
Speaking on Marquinhos’ arrival, technical director Edu said: “We’re delighted to have completed the transfer with Sao Paulo, as Marquinhos was a player we had been watching for a while. At 19, he is still very young, so he is a player for the future.
“We look forward to Marquinhos now joining us for pre-season, making his new home, and continuing to grow and develop with us.”
The Brazilian isn’t expected to compete for first-team minutes right away, but the vast majority of us are struggling to gauge what exactly his role could be next season. I suppose we’ll find a whole lot more out about the teenager once pre-season gets underway.
Should he impress, we could see Marquinhos playing as Bukayo Saka’s understudy come the start of the 2022/23 campaign – presuming Nicolas Pepe is sold, of course. But that projection is incredibly optimistic. Instead, it’s likely that the teenager will start out in the Under-23s, with opportunities at a senior level manifesting via the Europa League and domestic cup competitions.
