Arsenal announced the signing of Brazilian teenager Marquinhos for a reported £3m fee, but other deals need to be completed in the same, swift manner.

The Gunners have got their summer transfer business off and running. The last time the club ventured to South America, it worked out quite well; a kid named Gabriel Martinelli was signed. With Marquinhos signing for the club, we have another Brazilian in our ranks.

While it is good that this little piece was business was wrapped up rather swiftly, it is not the announcement that Gunners fans envisioned. This is very much a “one for the future” signing. The other big fishes are still out there.

With Erling Haaland’s move to Manchester City now official, it is expected that talks surrounding Gabriel Jesus’ future will ramp up. Youri Tielemans has been linked with the club, but being on international duty, nothing has happened on that front as of yet.

New Arsenal signings have to be available for pre-season

Mikel Arteta stated that he wants his new signings to be a part of the club’s pre-season. With Arsenal due back at London Colney on June 27 and their summer friendlies getting underway on July 8 against FC Nurnberg in Germany, time is running out to secure the services of Jesus and Tielemans in a bid to have them in the squad for the tour.

With pre-season due to begin in a couple of weeks and the new league season starting on August 6, we do not want the club to be sitting on its hands, trying to nickel and dime its way to a deal that gets done in the last hour of the summer window. We have seen that movie before, and it is not good viewing.

Several reports have suggested that Arteta is unhappy with the Arsenal hierarchy as they are dragging their feet over potential deals. The club is at a time in its development when new signings must be made, and such additions must be given ample time to adjust and adapt to a fresh environment and system. The Arsenal boss will want any summer additions to be ready for Matchday 1 of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

With Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, and Martin Odegaard still on international duty, there is a real possibility that all three will miss the first couple of games of the season, maybe the entire month of August. That would leave Arsenal very shorthanded player-wise.

The signing of Marquinhos is a good start, but the club can not sit back and wait to complete its other deals. As they say, history repeats itself, and if it does this pre-season and the fans are forced to wait into the witching hour for a new signing, it will only spell trouble.
