Midfielder Lucas Torreira will return to the club after it was revealed that Fiorentina will not be purchasing the Uruguayan permanently.

Forgotten midfielder Lucas Torreira will make the journey back to London Colney for Arsenal pre-season after his loan spell with Italian side Fiorentina ended.

It was reported that Fiorentina had agreed on a €15m (£13m) fee with the Gunners when the loan deal was set up last summer. But in an odd twist in events, the Italian side have offered just £6m for the midfielder. The move has reportedly angered the Gunners so much that the club has not even responded to the offer, according to The Sun.

On top of that, Fiorentina have avoided paying Arsenal the £1.2m loan fee as the Uruguayan played more than the 25-game threshold last season.

Lucas Torreira will not be joining Fiorentina permanently & is set to return to Arsenal for pre-season

With only a year left on his current contract, the midfielder is at a crossroads in his career after being so public about his love for the Italian club. It was generally thought that Torreira would become a permanent Fiorentina player after his loan deal expired, so much so that personal terms had already been agreed upon.

The Italians have thrown a massive spanner in the works, and now the 26-year-old will return to Arsenal, where he knows he has no future.

Torreira took to Twitter to post his goodbye message and hinted that “those acted in a bad way” to stop his move from becoming permanent.

"“Know I did my best to continue forming part of this club,” Torreira said.“But unfortunately there were those acting in a bad way. According to my understanding, they managed to stop this happening and that’s why I must go.”"

It is a sad and bitter ending to what many thought was a signed, sealed, and delivered deal between player and club. But for whatever reason, Fiorentina are refusing to pay the fee agreed with Arsenal last summer. Torreira will now be looking for a new club after this latest mishap.

The midfielder featured 35 times for Viola in all competitions, scoring five goals and having two assists in the league.
