In contrast to the scenes of celebration that accompanied title glory in 2002, the campaign’s conclusion was also tinged with sadness as we bade farewell to ‘Mr. Arsenal’ Tony Adams after 19 wonderful years at the club.

This departure meant the Gunners were on the lookout for their first new captain in 14 years and, conscious of the big boots to be filled, Wenger entrusted the role to his compatriot. Vieira became the first player from beyond the British Isles to take the Arsenal armband and he proved his suitability for the role with outstanding displays of courage and leadership whenever he took to the field.

The French international himself once described receiving the honour as the “proudest moment” of his career and, as a former World and European champion with over a dozen domestic prizes to his name, that is certainly not something said lightly.
