Official: Matteo Guendouzi completes permanent exit to Marseille
Arsenal have confirmed the permanent departure of Matteo Guendouzi to Marseille after the midfielder impressed out on loan with the French club last season.
Guendouzi joined the Gunners from Lorient in 2018 and enjoyed a promising debut season in north London under Unai Emery. His tenacity and exuberance saw him earn the admiration of supporters, but his relationship with the club quickly soured after Mikel Arteta took charge in December 2019.
The Spanish boss never saw eye-to-eye with Guendouzi and the Frenchman’s apparent bad attitude convinced Arteta he was never going to be a part of his rebuild at the Emirates.
Thus, the midfielder enjoyed loan spells with Hertha Berlin and Marseille for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons respectively.

Guendouzi starred for Marseille last season as he ended the campaign with 19 goal contributions from 56 appearances in all competitions. The 23-year-old played in every Ligue 1 game for Jorge Sampoali and he helped Marseille return to the Champions League following a brief absence.
His permanent departure has been inevitable ever since he first clashed with Arteta in Dubai mid-way through the 2019/20 campaign. The young midfielder’s antics against Brighton in a 2-1 defeat later that season saw him frozen out by the manager and he never played for the club again.
However, Guendouzi still has fond memories of his time at Arsenal. Before he was loaned out to Marseille last summer, the Frenchman said: “I will never forget any minute spent with the Gunners jersey. I will never forget the Emirates Stadium. I will never forget the fans. I will never forget you and will be a Gooner forever.”
Confirming his permanent exit, the club wrote: “As part of the agreement with Marseille, Matteo has made his move permanent after spending 2021/22 on loan with the Ligue 1 club, during which time he became an integral part of their side, making 56 appearances in all competitions during the campaign.”
Marseille have paid £9m for the 23-year-old’s services.
“Everyone at Arsenal thanks Matteo for his contribution during his time with us and wish him all the best in this next chapter of his career,” the official statement concluded.
