Arsenal managed a 5-3 win over FC Nurnberg in their first pre-season hitout, with Gabriel Jesus starring in his first game for the club.

In a game that was a tale of two halves, Arsenal showed their worst and best sides against their German counterparts.

The first half was probably as bad as it could get, despite being preseason. Misplaced passes, nothing going forward, and, in all honesty, the side looked bereft of ideas. Then the start to the second half saw a 2-0 deficit be overturned in 12 minutes as the Gunners slammed in three quick-fire goals in a breathtaking display of football.

The result did not matter, but it is always nice to get a win under the belt and the way the side played in the second half gives us great confidence heading into the season, despite the opposition. There were plenty of positives to take out of the game as we got our summer off to the best possible start.

Here are four positives from the win over FC Nurnberg.

1. Gabriel Jesus and his superb debut

Kind of a given, right? When the teamsheet dropped and we saw the 25-year-old on the bench, there was a collective sigh of discontent from some fans online that the ‘star man’ wasn’t starting. It is pre-season, people, relax.

After a disjointed first half that was reminiscent of the Unai Emery days, the injection of Jesus changed the entire complexion of the game.

His energy, quickness, pressing, and finishing were all on show within 90 seconds of being on the pitch. He very well could have had three goals inside 12 minutes had it not been for two unlucky touches from Nurnberg’s defenders, Christopher Schindler and Tim Handwerker.

Everything about his 45-minute performance suggests that Arsenal have got a bonafide star on their hands. While most knew it already, to see the Brazilian integrating with the squad, performing neat one-twos, and most importantly, scoring was a sight to behold.

It has been a while that an Arsenal number 9 has looked so quick, energetic, and lethal in front of goal. For that second half, football was fun again.
