According to various reports, Arsenal are interested in signing Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante with just 12 months left on his contract.

The transfer rumours are coming thick and fast now. Arsenal have done some decent business so far, bringing in FC Porto’s Fabio Vieira, Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus, Marquinhos, and Matt Turner. Still, this latest name to be linked with the club could be a serious coup.

With only a year to run on his contract, N’Golo Kante has been linked with a move to Arsenal, according to the Daily Star Sport. Whether Chelsea would want to see to a direct rival needs consideration, though, as it would significantly strengthen the team’s weakest part, the midfield.

The 31-year-old midfielder struggled with injuries last campaign but has everything needed to continue to be the star player at the Emirates.

What would N’Golo Kante bring to the Arsenal midfield?

The need for a serious upgrade in the defensive midfield position is something that needs to be rectified this summer. While Youri Tielemans has been sounded out, Kante is a different beast altogether.

Kante would bring profound experience to a youthful Arsenal side as he boasts two Premier League titles with Leicester City and Chelsea.

Regarded by many as the best defensive midfielder in Europe, Kante would be an excellent addition to the Arsenal ranks. His reading of the play, supreme tackling ability, and capacity to cover every blade of grass on the pitch for 90 minutes while still having enough in the tank to keep going would make him a sensational fit next to Thomas Partey.

One thing that Mikel Arteta would like about the 31-year-old is his versatility, something that seems to be a prerequisite for any player the Spaniard signs. Whether as a box-to-box midfielder in a two, the lone pivot, or as part of a three-person midfield that Arteta has been known to use, Kante can do it all and then some.

Given that Kante is in the final year of his contract, it is thought that Arsenal could be able to steal him away from their London rivals on the cheap. Although likely not to accept anything less than £20m to £25m, his wages would also provide a stumbling block as it would smash the Gunners’ wage structure. Would the 31-year-old be willing to cut his salary by a considerable margin? Unlikely, but Arsenal can still ask the question.

While it is just rumoured at this point, and we all know not to go headfirst into believing everything we read, should the Kante to Arsenal rumours gather pace, having him in the midfield next season would be something special.

We can dare to dream, can’t we?
