Why Martin Ødegaard is a fantastic choice for Arsenal captaincy
After months of speculation since the dramatic removal of Pierre-Emrick Aubameyang from the role last season, reports are pointing to Martin Ødegaard to be the next man to permanently take the armband for Arsenal next season.

Despite only being 23 and joining the club permanently last summer, Martin seems almost tailor-made for the position. He is the captain of Norway and wore the armband at the end of last season when Alexandre Lacazette and Kieran Tierney were out of the lineup, and time and time again he seems to be Mikel’s tactical voice on the pitch. He is the player that is most often seen on the sidelines during stoppages to receive instructions from Arteta. He has proven to be a very important player for the Gunners and fits the bill as a great choice to be captain.
A very interesting insight into the Norwegian’s relationship with the manager comes from Aaron Ramsdale’s appearance on That Peter Crouch Podcast. When asked of his teammates was the most “parched” (someone who would skip drinks breaks in training and would always be in the manager’s ear to discuss tactics), Aaron said Ødegaard fit the bill.
Another interesting detail from the section is that despite Mikel and Martin both speaking English, they prefer to communicate with each other in Spanish. I think this detail makes Martin a clear choice for the captaincy next season.
Many fans, myself included, wanted the next captain to be Kieran Tierney and while I think he fits the mould, his availability throughout the season must come into question. A lot of boxes must be checked for a good captain and both KT and Ødegaard have a lot of them.
Just because KT doesn’t have the armband doesn’t mean he still won’t have a leadership role within the team. He’ll still be a vocal player like he has always been at the club.
Martin Ødegaard has quickly become one of my favourite players at the club, he’s incredible to watch and he’s a player that you can’t help but root for. There has been a bit of bad luck surrounding the captain role at the club in recent memory and I hope that Ødegaard can be the one to change the course of the role and the team.
