Arsenal have had some sensational strikers call Highbury and the Emirates home over the years, but who are the top five we’ve ever seen?

Scoring goals is the name of the game. If teams do not have a striker that they can rely on to score goals, then chances of finishing high in the league table or winning the league are virtually zero.

Over the years, Arsenal has been known for its fluid football that is so easy on the eye. Scintillating passing and superb movement all finished off by tucking the ball into the back of the net.

Some have been towering strikers who use their physicality to impose themselves on defenders; others are lightning quick and can hurt you from anywhere in the attacking half.

With so many great strikers having played for Arsenal Football Club over its storied history, who are the top five of all time as chosen by the PITA writers?

5. Robin van Persie

Likely to cause some conjecture as the Dutchman left the club for rivals Manchester United, but no one could doubt his quality for the Gunners. RVP played 278 games for Arsenal, scoring 132 goals and grabbing 32 assists.

His left foot was an absolute weapon, and that was on show against Everton in 2011. Alex Song launched a ball forward to the Dutchman, who hit his shot first time and fired it into the net.

His ball control, technical excellence, and ability to always score a goal when Arsenal needed him to were features of his time in north London. After Cesc left the club for Barcelona, van Persie was handed the armband, something that he took with great assurance, and he led from the front superbly.

He would finish that calendar year on 35 league goals, just one shy of Alan Shearer’s record as, at times, Arsenal was a one-man team.

He finished the 2011/12 season with 30 league goals and 13 assists from his 38 games. After a superb campaign, he would then break our hearts as he made the decision to leave the club for direct rivals Manchester United.

While that without a doubt tarnished his legacy with Arsenal, it would be unfair to forget what such an incredible player the Dutchman was for the club.
