Nuno Tavares’ short-term future is close to being resolved after Marseille agreed a deal with Arsenal to sign the full-back on a season-long loan.

Oleksandr Zinchenko’s arrival from Manchester City slid Tavares down the Gunners’ left-back depth chart and the club were keen for the 22-year-old to earn regular first-team minutes in 2022/23.

After joining from Benfica last summer, Tavares was called upon plenty of times by Mikel Arteta as Kieran Tierney’s injury woes saw him miss half of the season. And while Tavares boasts raw athletic talent and a unique left-back profile, he’s still some way from being the reliable squad member Arteta desires.

A loan move away was expected this summer, and Tavares is poised to move overseas for the upcoming season.

The 22-year-old’s talent meant he garnered plenty of interest this summer and for a while, it looked like Tavares would be joining Atalanta with Brighton also in the running.

However, negotiations fell through with the Italian club and Marseille swiftly pounced. The French giants have long been interested in signing Tavares on loan with their relationship with Arsenal supposedly a healthy one following recent transactions regarding William Saliba and Matteo Guendouzi.

Marseille only re-opened talks with Arsenal over Tavares on Thursday morning and they’ve already been able to strike a deal. Fabrizio Romano reports that a full agreement between the two clubs has been reached.

Tavares will undergo his Marseille medical on Friday before he’s officially unveiled at the Vélodrome. No buy option has been included in the deal, which certainly suits Arsenal.

The Portuguese full-back is likely to perform a more advanced wing-back function in France following Marseille’s appointment of Igor Tudor. The former Juventus assistant worked wonders with Hellas Verona last season while deploying a 3-4-2-1. Whether he sticks with the back three at his new club remains to be seen, but such a system will suit the adventurous and athletic Tavares.
