Hector Bellerin is still on Arsenal’s books but the club are actively working to facilitate his departure with Real Betis keen on securing his signature.

Bellerin spent the 2021/22 campaign out on loan at Betis after making 25 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s Gunners the season before. It quickly became clear that the Spaniard wasn’t a part of the manager’s long-term plans, with the right-back enduring a steep athletic decline.

Bellerin returned to north London earlier this summer and has captained the side on a couple of occasions during pre-season. The full-back is a fine leader and his admirable professionalism has been on display this summer – even if he wants out of the club.

An update on Hector Bellerin’s Arsenal future

There’s a feeling of when, not if, regarding Bellerin’s Arsenal exit this summer. While Arteta clearly respects him as an individual and a professional, he doesn’t want his compatriot on the club’s books for 2022/23.

Reports suggest Arsenal will need to sell a few players before they head back into the market for a new central midfielder and dynamic wide player.

Bellerin is one of the first that could depart. According to Matteo Moretto, the player’s representative has been in talks with the Gunners over his client’s departure with Arsenal even considering the termination of the Spaniard’s contract.

Betis are interested in signing Bellerin permanently, but the full-back’s €4m salary is proving to be problematic.

However, other clubs are keen on signing the 27-year-old this summer, and I’m sure plenty will jump at the opportunity of potentially acquiring Bellerin on a free transfer.

Arsenal are well-stocked at right-back heading into the new season with Ben White emerging as an option there for Mikel Arteta following the return of William Saliba. Takehiro Tomiyasu was first-choice last season and he was supported by Cedric Soares, who’s said to be an invaluable leader in the dressing room.
